Bec and I have our two girls here at Birchwood and its exciting to be part of their education and meeting, from time to time, with the teachers to understand and learn what steps we need to take in the learning process.
For two years I've been a participating trustee on the board, but over the last few months I've had the pleasure, in my new role as chairperson of the Board of Trustees, to see the school from yet another view point. I've been meeting Chris most weeks to maintain the connection between board and school. It's also been good to gain a greater understanding for what Chris does in running the school. I've also had the privilege to connect with the Home and School committee in the work they do for the school in community activities and fundraising like the senior school fitness trail, Kapa Haka group uniforms and many more.
Over the last 18 months the Board of Trustees have been working on a completely new governance framework. This is a new document to spell out the way we operate, respect and relate as a board, the schools management and community. Most recently a subset of the Board has been reviewing our current set of policies and creating a new set of guiding policies, which fit within the new governance framework. These polices set the direction and boundaries for school management to operate within, on behalf of the Board. I'm pleased to say that we have finished the draft document.
Therefore the Board agreed, at our recent board meeting, to approve it as DRAFT and ask our community for your feedback on it. We have printed copies available on request from the office and it will be available for viewing online on the school's website www.birchwood.school.nz. (under the Newsletter tab).
Your feedback is important to us and to give us time to consider your thoughts, I would appreciate your feedback by Friday 10 September to allow our policy review committee time to consider it prior to finalising the document so we can adopt it at our next Board meeting on 21 September.
Feedback can be via email at email@example.com or give your name and details to the office and we will be in touch.
Best Regards, Ian Hussey, Chairperson, Birchwood School Board of Trustees.
